You typed "best web designer near me" into ChatGPT. You showed up. You took a screenshot. You sent it to your mom.
Bad news: the person who actually needs a web designer probably saw a completely different answer.
AI search is personal now. Here's what that means and how to write for it.
Quick words (one line each):
Prompt: the question someone types into an AI tool.
Personalized: shaped around the person asking, based on what the AI knows about them and the chat so far.
Logged out: using ChatGPT without signing in, so it knows nothing about you.
Case study: a real story of one customer: their situation, budget, problem and result.
Citation: a link or source an AI answer points to.
The proof: same question, totally different answers
Devesh from Grow and Convert (Oct 15, 2026) shared a real lead who found them through ChatGPT, with an answer shaped around her own business (0:01:20-0:05:40).
Then they ran the same prompt logged out. Totally different answer. They weren't even mentioned (0:06:00-0:07:20).
Here's the catch: tools that track prompts see that logged-out version (0:06:00-0:07:20). And real people don't ask one question. They have long back-and-forth chats with context you can't see (0:08:20-0:11:40).
So the AI does the filtering. Your job is to be the obvious fit when it does (0:12:00-0:14:40).
Step 1: Answer three questions about your business
Grow and Convert start every strategy here (0:21:20-0:22:40):
Who are our best customers?
What do we do best?
In what situations?
Write the answers down. Be specific. "Small businesses" is not an answer. "Restaurants that need online ordering" is.
Step 2: Turn each situation into a page or post
Don't let prompt volume decide what you write. Go brand-led: cover each situation and pain point where you're the right fit (0:15:00-0:20:20).
Three best customers times two situations each = six pages. That's a content plan. You're welcome.
Step 3: Still write for normal Google searches
SEO blog posts still teach AI, because AI searches Google for fresh info (0:23:00-0:27:40). You can't see its hidden follow-up searches, so write for the related Google searches and explain who you're a fit for inside the post.
Step 4: Write detailed case studies
For each best customer, write 2-3 real case studies: the situation, the budget, the pain points, what you did (0:31:20-0:34:20).
Why? So the AI can match a new person with the same problem to your story.
Step 5: Make feature and service pages plain
Feature pages should be plain and specific, not cute (0:31:20-0:34:20). "We make websites that convert" means nothing. "Online ordering setup for restaurants, live in 2 weeks" means something.
Clever headlines are for billboards.
Step 6: Get mentioned on industry sites, not just Reddit
In Grow and Convert's study of 2,000 citations from their clients, 86% came from industry-specific or nearby sites and only 14% from general ones like Reddit, Wikipedia and YouTube (0:34:40-0:38:20). That's their own client data.
So your own site and your industry's sites matter most. Trade directories and niche blogs first.
Step 7: Track a topic, not a prompt
Stop checking one prompt. Ask the same thing 5-15 different ways and measure how often you're mentioned (0:30:00-0:31:20).
Report "% mentioned," not "we're #2."
Want to find who to pitch? Nathan Gotch (Oct 28, 2026) runs about 25 prompts, exports the cited pages, finds the ones that don't mention you, and reaches out with a review or product to try (0:06:00-0:07:00).
Step 8: Answer bad stories on your own site
If there's a bad story or complaint out there, answer it on your own site (0:43:20-0:45:20). Otherwise the AI only hears one side.
Do this today
Write down your best customers, what you do best, and in what situations.
Pick one situation and outline a page or post just for it.
Write one real case study with situation, budget and result.
Write 5 versions of the question your best customer would ask an AI.
Run all 5 and note how many mention you. That's your starting score.
